Iowa Senate Confirms new Iowa Workers Compensation Commissioner

Following an appointment by Governor Terry Branstad, Joseph Cortese has been confirmed by the Iowa Senate as the next Iowa Workers Compensation Commissioner by a vote of 42-8. Cortese will have a six year term running through 2021.

Cortese was formally a partner at the Des Moines law firm of Huber, Huber, Book Cortese & Lanz, and has over thirty years experience in the area of workers’ compensation. Cortese is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, Polk County Bar Association, Iowa Association of Workers’ Compensation Attorneys, Iowa Defense Counsel Association, Defense Research Institute, and is a founding member of the American Academy of ADR Attorneys. This appointment is subject to confirmation by the Iowa Senate, but Cortese will assume his role as Commissioner on February 16, 2015.
